.x/Prologue/x. The vivid sun’s warming rays where slowly rising onto the walls of the stone castle, casting a shadow through the windows. A burst of wind forced the drapery to dance. Shadows on the icy castle floor where disturbed as a tall lean figure made it was swiftly down the hallway, allowing his cape to drag the floor behind him. The figure didn’t ease his pace until he reached a thick wooden door. Lifting a slim hand covered in what appeared to be dried dirt he pounded against it. Impatience swept over his mind as he reached for the handle and twisted it open revealing an elegant room.
The windows where covered with fine silky maroon drapes, matching the bedspread that covered the wooded canapé bed. Within the spreads heavy protection was a young child. The slender man made his way to the bed and gently shook the child, “Come on” where is only words as he helped the sleepy child of her bed and onto the icy floor. She shivered as her thin body was exposed to the fierce gust of wind that brought a frightful coldness with it.
The slender man handed the child a violet cape, similar to the one he was wearing. His dirty hands was grabbing the child’s arm when she ordered, “I must get something.” Her dull green eyes met his as he released her arm. She ran over to a small wooden chest at the foot of her mighty bed. She reached her hand inside her thin nightgown and pulled out a golden key attached to a chain. She carefully lifted the chain off of her neck and allowed her dirty brown curls to rest back on her shoulders. The small girl looked at her father who was motioning to hurry up. She obeyed. Each movement she made was slightly faster than the previous one as she placed the golden key into the chest and turned it.
A soft click was heard as she released the key and put it back around her neck, not bothering to free her curls who where trapped down by the shinning chain. She lifted the chest with difficulty. Her pale hands reached into it. She lifted up a small stack of books and placed them on the floor around her, “Jane, we must leave!” the slender man ordered in a rushed tone as he watched his daughter take out piles of books.
After quickly taking out four small stacks of books Jane found it. Her body felt a rush of excitement as she picked up a small black box. “Jane really” her fathered ordered again. “I have it father!” was her only reply as she stood up holding the small box against her chest. “I have it” she repeated as she ran to her father. He father took her small arm into his hands as he opened the door and hurried out of the bedroom, leaving the mess for later.
“Where are we going?” Jane asked her father as she dashed down the hall. Her father stopped in his tracks, turned to his daughter and took her right hand in his. “Jane, there is something you must understand.” His voice was filled with fear and sorrow as he looked into his daughter’s innocent green eyes.” Something is going to happen soon, very soon. We are going to the bottom cellar with the rest of the kingdom, to escape it.” He didn’t have the courage to tell his daughter the truth. That he and the rest of the kingdom where going to die. That there home was going to be destroyed when there world hit another, he couldn’t tell his daughter that she would see her mother’s tanned face and blue eyes again, he just couldn’t.
“But why?” she protested, wanting to know the entire truth. The man’s eyes filled with sorrow as he said, “That doesn’t matter” he stopped wondering if she would protest. After seeing that she would not say anything he continued, “What matters, Jane, and that we get to the cellar, now”
The man dropped her pale hand gently and said, “Come on” The father and daughter’s pace changed to a run as they approached the cellar. An army officer was waiting to greet them at the opening of the cellar, “Your majesty” the officer said as he bowed down. “There isn’t time for that” the king insisted as he gave his daughter a small push, indicating for her to go down the stairs. She gave her father a look of sorrow as she saw the worried faces of her kingdom’s men, women, and children. She knew this was serious. This was the first time in her lifetime the entire kingdom was in the emergency cellar. She could tell by the closeness of everyone that this cellar was not meant for the amount of people it had in it. She stopped at the end of the rich wooden staircase and waited for her father to rest his hands on her shoulder.
As he led her past a group of poor men, she gripped her black box tighter in fear of it being stolen. She felt a jolt as the once warm box felt icy against her. She turned toward her father’s lean figure and noticed his rich brown eyes where clouded with fear. He was looking towards the staircase that was holding the guard. The king made a slow nod, and the guard ran up the stairs. A loud crash was heard as he pulled the door shut, locking it with many golden locks.
Jane grabbed her thick violet cape and covered herself in it as her father stepped onto a small wooden stool allowing him to see over the majority of the group. He saw hundreds of people whose fate where resting in the thick walls of the cellar.
“People of Maugrim” he began. “The time we have feared for many fortnights is here. The time when our world will crash into another –“he was cut off by the gasps of the women whose faces where struck with horror. He looked down at his daughter and saw her once joyful face covered with fear as a tear made its way down her face and onto the floor. He turned his attention to his kingdom, “I have ordered you here in hopes of safety. Please remain calm, it will be for the better” he stopped he placed his right foot, protected by a leather boot onto the ground near his daughter.
“How de ye know if it true?” a husky looking man asked from the crowd. The king placed his right foot back on the wooden stool as he replied, “Maugrimist, people who study our world and the space around it, have been studying the orbit of this planet for years, through magic. They have confirmed that the two orbits meet, and will collide today” he could tell be the man’s expression that he believed the king. “Remain Calm” were his last words as he stepped off of the stool. He placed his dirty hand on his daughter slender hips and placed her on the wooden stool. He let his index finger run under eye green eyes wiping away the tears. He brushed his hand through her brown curls and said, “You too my princess, must remain calm” The thick walls of the cellar began to ice over as a cold draft spread throughout the cellar. Young infants began to cry, as the women tried to hush them. Men stood near their wives and children in hopes to protect them for danger. The cellar began to rattle and shake as the air grew colder and colder. And then, when it felt as though their world was truly ending, it all stopped.
The shaking ceased, the cold air was slowly turning warmer. “I’ll go check” said the guard who had let the royals into the cell. After the guard unlocked nearly five locks he, with the help of other men, pushed the heavy door open. He slowly took a small step out onto the castle floors. The guard man screamed for joy as he looked at the castle. Most of the portraits that once hung on the stone wall rested on the ground. A few rocks had fallen from various places, but overall the castle was intact.
Few other men took the small step out into the castle. They too let out a screams of joy. The guard ran through the hallways, until he reach a large fallen wooden door. From the large crack between the fallen door and wooden door that was still hanging he could see devastation.
Trees were uprooted, houses nothing more than a pile of wood, boats in the small river near the castle flipped onto their sides. The man made his way through the doors to get a better look. The once rich green grass was flooded with the river’s icy water, and yet the guard’s eyes were still gleaming with joy. Upon seeing the destruction he turned around and dashed for the cellar only to find many groups of people already evacuating the cellar’s stone walls. “It's ok!” he shouted from feet away, “Toyed with, but still ok!”
The people let out deep sighs of relief as the king and his daughter made their way out of the cellar. He cleared his voice to catch the attention of the excited people. “Our Kingdom is safe!” He voice rang out among the crowd before hushed by the cheering of the people. Once the cheers had hushed down into mere whispers the king continued, “Return to your houses tonight! Sleep with peace knowing you are safe. Help to all who need it will be at your doorstep by morning, but for now relax” the townspeople cried out with joy again and slowly faded to soft conversations. People slowly gathered their children and made their ways out of the castle.
The sky’s once scorching rays had now calmed into a small glow as it sank back into its bed. The tall and slender man was now sitting at his office in his study while his daughter lay fast asleep on the common room’s couch. There was a light knock at the wooden door before the king answered, “Come in”
Two men dressed in black robes walked into the room, slowly. The king drew his attention to the two men as they sat down in the satin chairs. “What happen today?” the king inquired. “We haven’t a clue” answered the shorter of the two men. “We believe that Maugrim wasn’t close enough to collide. We believe that the jolt was Maugrim going into the counter orbit of the other worlds orbit. We believe that Maugrim will not hit this world until they have orbited and are ready to meet.” the small fragile man started to shake in his seat. “And?” the king asked the two men. His green eyes clouded in fear until the smaller man continued, “We don’t believe they will collide for another thousand years”
